Uncharted Loses Director, Gains Script Doctors, Will Likely Die Soon

Uncharted-4

Neil Burger, director of Limitless (which I saw the other day and was quite good, you should see it, maybe I missed the moral at some point but I’d totally take one of those pills) has dropped out of Uncharted and the studio has brought it scripting duo Marianne and Cormac Wibberley for script rewrites. The duo are behind such cherished classics as Charlies Angels Full Throttle, Bad Boys 2 and both National Treasure films.

Yes, the Uncharted film is going to make Tomb Raider look like the mother flipping Dark Knight. At this point the best we should hope for is that an Uncharted movie never, ever gets made.

Xcom Trailer Looks Joygasmic

Xcom the original is a game I still regularly gush over at the very memory. Xcom the new game (Firaxis, not the 2K one which thankfully seems to have quietly slipped out of the party to stand on the balconey railing for a few moments, tears frosting on its cheeks from the cold winter wind, then silently throwing itself into the darkness, meanwhile the party continues with gusto behind the French doors, oblivious to the absent guest) looks like it may be everything I could ask for in a modern remake.

Fingers crossed it rocks on a turn based random scenario situation.

Supernova Sun is Eating a Planet Right Now (to us, but objectively millions of years ago)

supernova

Hello dear readers. You may notice a few articles over the next few weeks that deviate from the usual theme of gaming on That Aussie Game Site. Do not be alarmed, there are changes coming and all will soon be revealed.

So a nearby, as in only a few million light years away so it’s visible, star is going supernova and consuming it’s orbiting planets; which likely included the planet containing the peaceful and beautiful aliens who were going to teach us the secrets of the universe and the key to ultimate happiness. The star, with the sexy name of BD+ 48 740, but I’m going to call Unicron, is 11 times bigger than our sun and has currently swelled to the Red Giant stage before it collapses in on itself and becomes a black hole. Astronomers ascertained the star was eating it’s planets when they identified high levels of lithium in the star and a nearby Jupiter sized planet in an erratic orbit which may have been caused by nearby planets gravity wells disappearing. These two factors indicate there were other planets closer to the star that have been consumed by the red giant.

Fascinating and awesome, just think, we’re only 5 billion years away from a similar fate here on earth. Plus I imagine it'll be very similar to the opening of Transformers The Movie.

The Wednesday Cap – Metamorphosis

Shortly this very website, the one you’re looking at right now, is going to enter a strange state of change; a change from its current caterpillar state in a beautiful multi coloured butterfly. Likely the middle period will involve some icky, messy mutating involving secretions and resins and things, but in the end we should have something a little different but the same. Obviously I don’t want to go into too much detail yet but I just want to preface this Wednesday Cap by saying that this will be the last news post of this format before the change.

So I hope you’ve enjoyed reading so far and I hope you continue to enjoy reading whatever we’re putting up here next into the future. On with the cap!

Apologies again for this being late, I've added as many details from Gamescon as I've been able to absorb in the last two days.

We’re but weeks away from the beginning of the holiday release calendar with all manner of delightful electronic entertainments right around the corner. GDC and Gamescon are both happening in Europe over the next few weeks so we’ve got plenty of news to excite, titillate and attention grab in general. And yeah, maybe that article top image is a little larger than normal, but it's two steeped in awesome not to be on show.

Mists of Pandaria... I Still Think It Looks Cool

Deepest apologies. The Wednesday Cap is done and ready to go, but the go part has repeatedly stalled for personal reasons. I will hopefully get it up tomorrow evening as a very late Friday cap padded with lots of Gamescon news. Some encouraging forum comments and new posters would definitely inspire me as well ;-D

In the interim here's a snippet to tide you over.

Mists of Pandaria, the latest WoW expansion, has a cool launch trailer. Be a hater all you want on the the old money laundering grind that is Warcraft, but you can't deny Blizzard puts out some great trailers. This is definitely one of their good ones, understated, funny, and engaging while telling you all you need to know. They definitely take inspiration from Pixar when it comes to animation and self promotion.

Papo & Yo and Games as Therapy

Papoyo

There’s no question that video games get a bad rap. You only need to scroll down to read about a Police Commissioner and State Premier accusing games of being addictive and inciting violence. For fans of games it’s both depressing and infuriating, not just because of the stereotyping and public judgement devoid of any fact or evidence, but because at heart we’re well aware of the positive benefits of gaming.

Stories like the one behind Papo & Yo and its creator Vandar Caballero are a reminder of the positive side of games.

I was considering whether or not to even mention this as an individual blog post, especially as Dan had all ready spoken to the painful awfulness of the story, and given the original story in the Sydney Morning Herald and a follow up attempted beat up of the subject by 7 News had almost been dismissed by the media at large, but what the hell. These types of stories are red rags to me. I must attack.

In short, the NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione decided to rant about murder simulator games when discussing several recent assaults involving adolescents that resulted in two fatalities.
