Shortly this very website, the one you’re looking at right now, is going to enter a strange state of change; a change from its current caterpillar state in a beautiful multi coloured butterfly. Likely the middle period will involve some icky, messy mutating involving secretions and resins and things, but in the end we should have something a little different but the same. Obviously I don’t want to go into too much detail yet but I just want to preface this Wednesday Cap by saying that this will be the last news post of this format before the change.
So I hope you’ve enjoyed reading so far and I hope you continue to enjoy reading whatever we’re putting up here next into the future. On with the cap!
After a sustained lack of information, the typical Rockstar anti-hype machine process, we’ve got the leak off a few odd screenshots for GTA V showing some of the vehicles you’ll be crashing into buildings, people and other vehicles when you finally get your hands on GTAV. Do any of these screenshots give you the slightest idea what the game might be like? Not at all, but they're pretty.
So Command & Conquer Generals 2 is no Command & Conquer Online, a freemium game offering from EA. That’s okay, that’s palatable, right? Well now it seems Command & Conquer might not be the Command & Conquer you’re familiar with, namely the complete omission of a single player campaign. In an interview with PC Gamer the General Manager John Van Caneghem confirmed the lack of a single player game and said this mode, along with other modes, could be added later based on community demand. The real kicker for me is Van Caneghem then stating that their goal with this game is to bring it: "back to the roots of what made Command & Conquer great". Riiiiight.
Here’s a gameplay trailer for Star Wars 1313, which makes it looked even more like Star Wars Uncharted. This, lets be honest, is a pretty awesome thing to be.
Prey 2 was looking kind of cool, then it got cancelled, only it wasn’t really cancelled, development was just scaled back for a later release. Now the game has been removed all together from Bethesda’s website, but it’s not cancelled! Okay? Definitely not cancelled?
While previously only rumoured it’s now been confirmed that OnLive will be accessible through the Ouya on release next March. Of course that doesn’t mean much for Australian’s who continue to rank somewhere just above Krakatoa in terms of internet speeds.
In other OnLive news that really doesn’t concern us in Australia. The company behind the cloud streaming service has completely restructured following a sale and buyout. Apparently nothing has changed at all as part of the restructure, the management team remains intact and the services continue as normal. However, rumours swirl that around 50% of the staff were laid off and may have to reapply for their positions. Another even uglier rumour for the dissolving and restructure of the company is that it was a bit of corporate bastardry to allow them to legally renege on stock promises that had been made to employees.
The Scott Pilgrim DLC that introduced online multiplayer and a new playable character didn’t release last week as planned, and instead has been pushed back to Fall. I had to google it but it’s what American’s call Autumn, anyway, the ‘Fall window’ is September to December, but don’t expect an ‘early fall’ release as I’d guess if they meant to release it next month they would have said ‘next month’. It’s a broad window but cynical minds would guess at late November.
In whats probably a wiser, but still sad move THQ have axed a bunch of their marketing jobs and put more of their thin funds into development. Perhaps realising that sooner or later all the marketing in the world isn’t going to save a crap game and the best marketing is to make the best games. Here’s another tip, announce Darksiders 3 right now!
People have stopped playing Diablo 3. Some how this has shocked and horrified Blizzard who were expecting the player base to faithfully grind away from now till infinite. So they’ve introduced a new Paragon System that adds 100 additional levels once you’ve reached the games max level. Paragon levelling boosts core stats along with boosts to magic and gold find. Game Director Jay Wilson pointed out that high level players were getting frustrated with level 60 character runs that had barely any reward as far as drops go combined with a cost to repairing gear. My suggestion to those players would be to perhaps play another game. Darksiders 2 is very fun.
Rumour has it there’s a survey doing the rounds, issued from the dark towers of Bioware, that has questions related to Dragon Age 3. Questions, which meaningless subtitle appeals to you more: The Breach, Exarch, Inquisition, Apocrypha, or Electric Boogaloo? Also that you may play as an Inquisitor working for the notably intolerant Chantry to investigate a plot to destroy the magical order. All speculation and odd screenshots at this point, but interesting speculation. The further I get away from Dragon Age 2 the less I fondly recall my time playing it. The fact you're only character options are once again a Mage, a Warrior or a Rogue, is dissapointing. It doesn't sound like they plan on varying much from the previous formula.
Nintendo didn’t have to convince us their new 3DS XL was very big; we knew that from the name. But just to make sure they made a series of terrible and insipid commercials showing Penelope Cruz, who is very small, using a 3DS XL. Wow, actually she does make it look really big. As a comparison I may have to upload a video of me playing a 3DS XL when I get one, the console disappearing into my giant wrinkled hairy hands while my hideous potato skin face twists in perverted joy and attempts to giggle carelessly sound painfully forced. It’s the stuff of nightmares.
Project Copernicus, the MMO that Studio 38 were going to make, if they hadn’t mismanaged millions of investment dollars, screwed over all their staff and caused and economic crisis for the state of Rhode Island all on the reputation of baseball player with no business acumen, would have been free to play.
Dance Central 3 has a story line and it’s a little weird. Not creepy old man who watches you out the window all the time weird, more hilariously bizarre what acid was in the dev teams water supply weird. Also that guys mutton chops are crazy.
/p>
Dead Space 3 will allow you to stack weapons together, putting guns into guns. I feel like I should stick in that yo dawg meme, but I can’t bring myself to, sorry. I have failed you internet elders.
Spec Ops The Line. All ready one of my favourite games this year despite its faults. Now has a coop mode as part of a free update. Nice.
Dust 514, the PS3 shooter tied to a PC MMO space strategy game, also has its own tie-in in the form of a PSP Vita game/app called Dust 514 Neocom that lets you alter and update details of the game and your characters through your PSP. It’s like the babushka doll of space shooter games.
In addition to its very attractive looking outing on the PSP Call of Duty Black Ops 2 maybe coming to the Wii U.
You may recall the rather violent, rather exploitative, little trailer for Hitman Absolution involving nuns, latex and bazookas. You know the one. Well all that internet belly aching actually had an impact on the developers dontchaknow? While the killer nun characters, called The Saints, are still a part of the game, the developers went back to the game itself and show horned in a bunch of context and back story to characters to make them more than an ugly combination of sex symbols and gun targets. Sure it might not make a difference, but it’s always nice to read about developers making an effort to be responsive. Right? Isn't it? I feel slightly embarrassed even making a favorable arguement for the trailer now.
Here’s a dev diary for Halo 4 that’s noteworthy for one reason. There’s no dev’s rambling over the top of the footage, the visuals speak for themselves.
Fable The Journey, the first Fable game released in the period known as AM (After Molyneaux) has a demo coming out September 17.
Here’s ten minutes of Splinter Cell Blacklist gameplay, between this Dishonored and Assassins Creed 3 it seems like every major upcoming release involves neck stabbing. While the video looks pretty darn slick I’m still chaffing from the removal of Michel Ironside as the voice actor for Sam Fisher. I'm also a little uncomfortable with the torture elements on display here. Sure we saw some harsh treatment in Conviction, but the whole wiggling the knife with the left thumb stick to get them to talk. Doesn't seem like a super great direction for games to go. We've all ready got politicians at the highest levels of government equating water boarding with aromatherapy. I think games might be going to far when they involve objective based interactive torture scenes.
Talk about your awesome Collectors Editions. PC Game Dragon Commander, due out March 2013, comes with a boardgame version of the actual game if you pick of the special edition.
Valve is gearing up to launch a Beta of Big Picture Mode, making it easier for twits like me to play our PC games through our televisions.
Here’s a fantastic trailer for Ratchet and Clank: Full Frontal Assault, a game franchise that never fails to entertain me.
