Astronomers ascertained the star was eating it’s planets when they identified high levels of lithium in the star and a nearby Jupiter sized planet in an erratic orbit which may have been caused by nearby planets gravity wells disappearing. These two factors indicate there were other planets closer to the star that have been consumed by the red giant.
