Here's this weeks Wednesday Cap, I gotta warn you though, this is a big one, so you might want to go to the bathroom or grab a power bar or something. You're going to be sitting down for a while.
Here’s another trailer for Assassins Creed 3 that’s basically just a massive (and deserved) love in for the technology powering the next Assassins Creed game.
In the now familiar additional bit of Assassins Creed news the PS3 version will feature a full hour of additional (assumedly single player) content. That’s a pretty nuts amount of exclusive DLC. Sure to sway a few multi console owners on which version to buy.
Scott Pilgrim Versus The World, which incidentally is THE GREATEST game based on a film ever made, is getting online multiplayer so you can coop punch up with friends. The pack will also add the withering wit of room mate Wallace as a playable character. The update is a hefty 400 MS points thought and comes out on the 19 August.
One of my favourite pieces of news this last week is Rockstars first bit of Grand Theft Auto V marketing in a long while. Investors were feeling testy (heh heh) about the lack of information they were getting on the title so Rockstar released this link to the Epsilon Program, a seminar offered by KIFFLOM, a fictional religion that will appear in the game. Anything that makes fun of scientology which this clearly targets, is okay by me. http://www.epsilonprogram.com/
Day Z, the Arma 2 mod I was carrying on about last week. Is now its own standalone product with a release scheduled for some time soon. The developer Dean Hall is planning on a Minecraft model release with players offered a very cheap alpha level entry to the game with free updates and Johnny come lately’s paying a premium price for a later patched version.
August 9 (tomorrow) sees the release of The Chaos Pack with three face off maps and four Spec Ops Missions and a new mode called Special Ops Chaos Mode. September is the release of Final Assault, the last pack for MW3 with five new multiplayer maps. The release dates are initially for Xbox 360, followed later by PS3 and PC on an as yet unspecified date. The Activision blog makes mention of the fact the Call of Duty Elite Season pass has resulted in more content than they had originally promised, which even the most ardent Activision supporter has to admit is pretty cool.
Out with the old and in with the new. Here’s your first trailer for Call of Duty Black Ops 2 multiplayer, which as you’d expect looks pretty good. Certain people (usually called Moko) were consistently impressed with the multiplayer in Black Ops but it was never something I really got immersed in. I’m planning on giving Black Ops 2’s multiplayer a lot more time and this trailer cements that attitude.
Here’s an inspired bit of commentary on the repeated incidences and overtly sexist attacks on girl gamers and why it’s a terrible, inexcusable act. As a culture we’re very good at defending our rights and calling out unfounded and unfair stereotypical attacks on our character. Unfortunately we’re also very bad at turning a mirror on our own attitudes. http://gametyrant.co/news/2012/7/18/attacks-must-stop-towards-female-geeks-and-gamers.html
Here’s a staggering statistic to startle you. Little Big Planet just hit 7 million user created and submitted levels, holy moth balls.
Darksiders 2 has the now familiar New Game + mode and an arena mode for people who just want to keep playing the third person hack-venture. That’s my new term for third person action games, trademark pending.
Kickstarter console the Ouya is like really small. See!
Forbes has warned Activision investors to watch their stock like some kind of money focused vulture. Activision Blizzard Inc. is, surprisingly, almost completely financed by revenue from Word of Warcraft and there’s something of a suspicion that the cooler, cheaper, better looking MMO in town, Guild Wars 2, is going to prune WoW’s player base considerably. If that happens Activision stock is going to go down and the companies majority shareholder Vivendi (with 60% of the stock) is thinking of selling which could cause the Activision bubble to burst. Shareholders must have fingers crossed Mists of Pandaria is enough of a draw to keep MMO fans playing Warcraft.
Here’s an outright weird looking FPS survival game called Sir, You Are Being Hunted, where you have to escape from dapper steam punk robots in Victorian England. Sounds weird and awesome, aweirdsome!
Here’s an image that may be for some new Prince of Persia game. Personally I really liked Ubisofts last attempted reboot of the franchise that completely chucked the whole Arabian knights influence of the Sands of Time series and replaced it with some Japanese influenced fallen city exploration and Zoroastrian monomyth. But the impossible to die mechanic got a bit of a flogging from short sighted reviewers (read my review here). From this one screenshot it’s pretty clear the next Prince of Persia title is going in a whole nother direction again.
Paul Dini a major comics and animation mover, most notably regarded as the man behind the award winning Batman Animated Series, will not be returning to whatever Rocksteady Games are planning on doing next for Batman. He had worked on a freelance writer for Arkham Asylum and Arkham City but was basically told not to disregard other opportunities if he was waiting on a call from Warner Brothers or Rocksteady Games. Still no confirmation on what’s next for Batman, but please god, allah, Buddha, flying spaghetti monster, don’t let it be Silver Age Batman.
Here’s Farcry 3 coop details in video form.
The early to mid 90’s were a seminal time for first person shooters. Doom was the game everyone played and it was soon followed by copy cat titles that brought something new to the world, Heretic brought a fantasy setting, Descent (really an indoors flight sim) brought zero gravity and Duke Nukem brought boobs. One title, Rise of the Triads, brought surreal weirdness. That title is now making a come back with a modern version being developed for release next year.
If you like RTS games, you’re probably going to like Air Mech a whole lot. For its bright colours the game is a very serious, top down, hardcore RTS title. While the final game will be freemium, Steam has a Beta bundle for $20 that unlocks a heap of goodies. Otherwise you can download the totally free Beta to Chrome: https://www.carbongames.com/chrome.html
And in case it wasn't clear I'm a little besotted with this groovy little game here's a trailer too:
Sacred 2 was a reasonable popular, surprisingly good RPG. Since its release fans have asked, where’s Sacred 3? Not with a lot of volume or anger, more a quizzical, hands raised query. Well apparently Sacred 3 is definitely coming, and in the meantime we’ve got the very slick looking Sacred Citadel, a side scrolling 2D beat em up set in the same universe to tide us over.
THQ continues to bail projects like a lost sailor in a life raft full of holes. The latest project is Guillermo Del Toro’s game project Insane. I know nothing about the project but Del Toro’s involvement means the non existent game immediately gets five stars from me. The man with the monsters still retains the intellectual property and will likely shop it around to other developers. Meanwhile THQ manages to inch along, keeping its head above water after a massive restructuring, rounds of layoffs and closures, selling franchises and cancelling numerous projects. If you want to see more THQ games in the future I’d highly recommend you buy Darksiders 2.
Oculus Rift, the first ever VR headset that developers actually like and John Carmack can’t stop talking about at Quakecon, might have a surprise champion in the form of indie mega smash Minecraft. Notch is very keen for the Rift to support Minecraft and when you think about it, the blocky low res world of Minecraft seems like a perfect fit for an emerging VR technology.
Sony is launching several old titles as gold standard Collections, the first series getting the ritz treatment are inFamous and God of War. Really digging the design for these, after a mate stole my God of War 3 disc (I know you have it Daniel!) and I missed inFamous 2 I’d be quite keen to get both of these.
Filed under ‘long overdue lawsuits’, EA has taken legal action against Zynaga over their game The Ville and its ridiculously close similarities with The Sims Social.
In opposite world developers close their mobile divisions to focus on their next big high end PC game. Well it seems id Games (or should we say Bizarro id Games) did exactly that and shuttered their mobile games department to focus resources on Doom 4.
Dishonored will feature, among other things, the game debut of Susan Sarandon, voicing a ghastly harridan named Granny Rags, far removed from her persona as hottest older woman in Hollywood. Other voice casting includes Brad Dourif (Grima Wormtongue and like, a thousand other roles), Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia), John Slattery (guy in Mad Men), Michael Madsen (the original ear slicer), Chloe Moretz (Hit Girl) and Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister, ironically the ultimate slash fiction version of Princess Leia). A pretty stellar voice cast for a game that’s a new IP.
A new Kinect unit is being developed that not only will be wireless, but will work from almost any angle in a room making it a great deal easier to orient and use.
Temple Run has been downloaded 100 million times. That’s ten times the number of sold copies of Diablo 3. So it’s possible that crappy mobile game is one of the most played games of all time. Think about that for a moment.
Infinity Blade 2, an extremely fun but more expensive mobile game, is getting an update that includes a new area called Sky Cages and a new weapon called Solar Transport Energy Blades (it’s a lightsabers).
Army of Two has a new instalment coming out next year in March, subtitled The Devil’s Cartel. Set in the drug war in Mexico, which in the real world seems to be going worse than any actual war currently happening, this sequel promises to be more intense, mature and gritty than previous games. You know, as opposed to all the light banter, slap stick humour and animal husbandry side missions of the previous games...
There’s a browser based version of Cooking Mama with a twist, it’s Cooking Mama Breaking Bad. Yes, for real, Cooking Mama with crystal meth and a tweaked out Brian Cranston. Play it here before legal action shuts it down: http://flavourmachine.com/breaking/
Ada Wong is a playable character in Resident Evil 6. In case you don’t remember her, she’s that reporter who falls of the walkway at the end of Resident Evil 2, causing then rookie cop Leon Kennedy to scream, “NOOOOOOooooooooo”, or it might have been, “ADAAAAAaaaaaa”. Anyway, she’s back in RE6, as no character ever seems to die in Resident Evil games.
And last and least, The Andrew Lloyd Webber Sing and Dance Game for the Wii will be released on Sept 14. Please no one tell me daughter. I will have a breakdown if this game is in my house, it will be played all day every day until the music of Cats gives me post traumatic stress disorder like symptoms.
