Fifth Cell Goes From Language Puzzles to World War

In case you missed it, last year’s releases of Scribblenauts and its swift follow up Super Scribblenauts were bundles of creative fun. Using motorbikes, Large Hadron Colliders and vampires to solve physics puzzles was quirky, unique and enjoyable. Fifth Cell are following their innovative puzzle game with a third person shooter.

It’s like Xavier Rudd forming a John Farnham tribute band.

Fallout Nuka Break the Fan Film Blows My Mind

I love Fallout and Fallout 3 sucked me in like a black hole until I was dreaming about Vaults and Deathclaws on a nightly basis. But this example of fan worship for Fallout goes beyond my wildest dreams, it’s a fan film that any fan of Fallout would be proud off. Behold and rejoice fellow wasteland wanderers.

I think the only way to top this in the annals of Fallout fandom would be to actually set off a nuclear war. Where do they keep that computer that plays tic-tac-toe?

There’s a good chance you won’t get that last joke if you’re younger than 30.

Get Ready to Stamp Your Silent Hill Frequent Visitor Card Again

I’m going to come right out and say it, Silent Hill looks like a really crappy place to visit. Between ghoulishly voluptuous nurses, slimy monsters and the baring of your souls inner demons in corporeal form I just don’t think I’d enjoy staying there. But with Silent Hill Downpour approaching I get the feeling I’ll be going back for more colon spasming adventure.

My First Game Injury

Written by Aaron Mitchell | Tuesday, 01 February 2011 21:47

It's finally happened. In twenty odd years of regular game playing I have managed to avoid serious injury (of course, you know, other than the obesity), until now. So what finally did me in? Wii Remote to the face? Kinect tumble into a flatscreen television cutting my beautiful face to crimson ribbons? Believe it or not, it's goddamn Warcraft.

Allow me to explain. At work I sit at a desk all day that has been ergonomically setup by a pretty blonde to suit my back and posture perfectly. At home I have a $30 desk chair from Ikea and a piece of crap desk that's probably too high. After playing incalcuable hours of Warcraft while hunched over my screen during my holiday I've developed Bursitis, which is a rather painful inflamation of the shoulder. I thought I'd injured it doing one of the many manly activities I normally do like weight lifting, rugby or carrying hysterical women from burning buildings. So I stopped doing those things, but after three months it was still sore and I took a trip to the doctor today and found out the joint crippling behaviour was leveling up my Night Elf Rogue in Northrend.

Big deal, you giggle churlishly, just a sore shoulder, change your girly knickers and get back to gaming. Well it seems the treatment for Bursitis is a rather painful steroid injection right into the shoulder. Yes... ouch. So here's my health and safety gaming moment for 2011. If you're PC gaming for any great length of time, be sure to pause at least every 30 minutes and stretch and if possible ensure your desk and chair are ergonomically aligned. Google away, there's hundreds of webpages on how to do this and recommended stretches for desk bound folks. Trust me, you'll be glad you took preventative measures in the long run.

Jane McGonigal Wants Us to Save Ourselves With Games

I'm a gamer and if your reading this you're likely a gamer or someone related to me (again, hi mum). I imagine, even if you haven't consciously acknowledged it, that one of the things that draws you to games is the feeling of incredible untapped potential. The technology and creativity of games has evolved at an incredible rate, from space invaders and pong only mere decades ago, to massive worlds where people live whole other lives and share experiences with people they might never have contacted before. Like me you may have wondered why gaming isn't used for something greater than, you know, just games. Games are great, but why hasn't the medium been used in other, more innovative ways, like education, communication and therapy. I know certain games are used for these things, but game like worlds created specifically for the purpose are pretty rare. Maybe you don't think about these things, personally I think about them all the time and thats why I love games, it feels when playing a game that we all ready have one foot (or in the case of motion controls at the moment two feet and two hands) in the future and it feels cool.

The interesting lady in the video above is Jane Mcgonigal. She's one of those enviable people who turns interesting thought into actions and her TED talk is about just that. If you love games and haven't watched it yet I strongly recommend you do. On top of the futurist scenarios she proposes there's some interesting bites of info, like the fact todays children will have played as many hours of games by age 21 as they've spent time in school and how do we harness stuff like that.

I strongly suggest you watch the video then head to the forums and post your thoughts.

A Bulletstorm Demo for Oz Day

Written by Aaron Mitchell | Wednesday, 26 January 2011 02:02

Sure you could go out on Invasion/Australia Day and get blind, but you've got two more days of work before a proper weekend to recover. Whose idea was it to have public holiday on a Wednesday anyway?

Better yet you could spend the day playing the hell out of a demo for Epic Games (makers of Gears of War) new darling Bulletstorm. Screw national pride, you know you want to; if anyone gets in a stink about it just quote George Bernard Shaw, "Patriotism is a pernicious, psychopathic form of idiocy." Also look up Shaw on wikipedia to avoid looking silly.

Bulletstorm the demo will be queued up on your Xbox come the 26th January.

Brink Finds Art in Gunfire

There's plenty of games I'm plenty excited about in 2011. Chief among them is probably Brink. A title that combines Mirror's Edge style movement with Halo/CoD online gunplay. It could be very, very great.

The latest trailer is called a Choir of Guns and I think it speaks for itself.
