Oblivion with guns’ was the popular catchphrase both prior and post release for Bethesda’s post-apocalyptic RPG, Fallout 3.  Despite both games share many trappings including the game engine, Fallout 3 delivered an unprecedented level of choice and consequence requiring careful contemplation of each decision made within the world.  What is this, real life?

Venturing from Vault 101 for the first time and gazing across the desolate landscape of nuclear war-ravaged Washington D.C. was arguably the most awe inspiring moment of gaming in 2008.  The massive world delivered for your discovering pleasure was incredibly alluring making the game nigh on impossible to put down once you started.  The combat system was incredibly flawed yet so easy to overlook due to the endless amount of choice and freedom allowing one’s persona to be purest of pure, devilishly evil or somewhere in between.  Gamers will undoubtedly trade stories for years to come of the countless ways various quests or story arcs were completed.   The seemingly endless number of solutions for completing a quest offered some of the highest replay value seen in a game for some time.

Fallout 3 isn’t just one of the best games this year; it’s one of the best games of this generation thus far.
