EA’s brand new survival horror IP Dead Space, released this October to critical acclaim with some of the most impressive production values seen in a game this year.  Developer EA Redwood Shores took us on a journey to the derelict spacecraft USG Ishimura, eschewing the stereotypical space marine persona  and casting the player as everyday engineer Isaac Clarke. What we experienced were incredibly immersive and atmospheric environments that constantly evoked memories of Sci-Fi films Aliens, The Thing and Event Horizon.

Whilst Dead Space’s many inspirations from film and video games are both obvious and numerous, it still managed to feel original and fresh presented with the highest levels of polish in every aspect.  Combat and controls were as tight as benchmark setting titles like Gears of War making ‘strategic dismemberment’ infinitely more enjoyable than routine headshot spamming.  There were numerous visual effects and mesmerising set pieces borrowed straight from Hollywood that completely sold the experience and made it one of the most immersive games on this generation of consoles.  The biggest praise is reserved for the sound; it takes on a life of its own delivering non-stop tension that is only relieved by turning off the game.  Dead Space’s sound doesn’t just create atmosphere, it completely messes with your head.

Although not overly original, Dead Space delivered one of the most memorable singleplayer experiences this year remaining completely enjoyable from start to finish.
