Torchlight is currently the game of the week on XBL and is a bargain at only 1200 points. RPG’s have been done to death but Torchlight boasts a fine pedigree, being crafted by the mastermind behind the Diablo series. So dive with me into a dungeon as we explore dank caves and loot for treasure on a quest to find out why this game is a must play.

Torchlight is set in the town of the same name and is infested with dungeons full of goblins, trolls, skeletons and gigantic enemies. You start out by choosing a class and a pet with the aim of saving Torchlight from impending doom. Adding a pet as a side kick is pure awesomeness ask any Fable fan, the classes are the typical fare of CQC, long distance and magic.

Graphically the game is cartoonish, bright and colourful and fits the fantasy realm very neatly. The variety of environments and levels was very surprising and well thought out.  The battle system which is a button masher incorporates some very nice looking magic and special attacks. As your character progress so do the range of weapons, armour and magic spells that become available. It is done well and always has you referring back to the inventory to make sure your character is as strong as possible.

The difficulty curve all comes to down to careful item management. Torchlight rewards players who ensure that they constantly have the best armour and weapons that are available. Your inventory quickly swells but with the ability of loading up your pet mid quest or even better sending your pet back to town you are never bogged down by the allowed level of micro management.

The game is great fun and urges you to continue playing through to the conclusion of the main story. The side quests are great for chasing for another level of progression or a higher fame level. Torchlight does suffer from being a little repetitive at times but this is consistent with the genre and most RPG nuts won't mind.
