Batman Arkham City was my favourite game of last year. I played it religiously, wearing my plastic children’s Batman mask the entire time. It was simply thrilling. So I was pretty surprised at the announcement and almost immediate release of an expansion campaign, adding to the single player story. Needless to say I donned my plastic mask and downloaded it.
Harley’s revenge stars Harley Quinn, fan favourite character and long suffering love interest of the Joker. It’s impossible to talk about this expansion without spoilers for Arkham City, so here’s your warning. If you don’t want the climax of Arkham City ruined tune out now.
Comic fact: Robin works part time as chiropractor
Are they gone?
Okay good.
Since the death of the Joker at the conclusion of the main game Harley Quinn has been in deep mourning. Dressed in a black veil and carrying a big gun. She’s decided to console herself by kidnapping a bunch of cops to lure Batman into a trap. Surprisingly this works, and Robin, the boy wonder, needs to break into Harley’s hideout to free Batman from a death trap.
Comic fact: Batman understandably suffers from spastic colon
I hate Robin, I’ve hated the character for as long as I can remember. Especially the Tim Drake Robin, which this Robin happens to be, even though his appearance looks closer to the new Damian Wayne, Robin. But Rocksteady Games have done the unthinkable; they’ve made the character of Robin cool, not Batman levels of cool, but cool nonetheless. Robin has a few new moves and gadgets over his sensei, including a very handy bullet shield. These gadgets and unique moves won’t be new to anyone who has played the previous Robin Challenge Map DLC but getting to use them in a campaign mission is delightful fun.
Comic fact: Batman products are illegal in Sumatra where the word Batman means 'throbbing penis'
While more Arkham City is definitely a good thing, the DLC has a few stumbles. While playing as a new character is cool, you only get to use Robin within the actual mission. He’s not available as a free roam character like Batman or Catwoman. The whole thing is just a little too damn short as well, bowling down to a couple of fights, a couple of predator sections and a couple of puzzles. There’s a new collectable to scour for in the form of Harley balloons around the place, but overall it’s not very difficult to get every achievement in one playthrough. There’s also an element of the DLC that doesn’t go anywhere. Oracle and Robin have a discussion about Batman and how he hasn’t been coping super well since the deaths of the Joker and his hot ninja squeeze Talia al Ghul. It’s a tantalising plot element that doesn’t follow up, hinting that Batman might be a bit fragile mentally (more so than usual) but we never see how or what impacts it has plot wise. There’s an old writers phrase, something along the lines off you can’t mention there’s a gun mounted over the mantelpiece unless someone gets shot with it before the final scene. Harley’s Revenge doesn’t follow through in that way.
Comic fact: in case you didn't guess and you try to sound clever during a dinner party, none of these facts are actually true
As an expansion pack Harley’s Revenge is the epitome of what DLC should be, good quality, reasonably priced, and expanding on the existing story. If you were a fan of Arkham City or Batman in general you’ve probably all ready downloaded the pack and are merrily beating thugs to pieces. If you haven’t you should, Harley’s Revenge expands and improves on the world of Arkham City and will get you hungry for more DLC, or better yet, the next Rocksteady Batman game.
