Nexuiz - Review

What great joy it has brought me to jump back into a first person shooter where I need no level of skill to come out on top. The last fast paced FPS unleashed on gamers in this era would be Unreal Tournament III back in 2008, so Nexuiz would come as a bit of a surprise to many FPS fans. Unlike many of the major releases today, Nexuiz is the result of a mod released for Quake back in 2001. For those that are unfamiliar with the Quake series, you are basically smashed into a small arena made up of different scenarios (eg. Jungle, tower etc.) with only one objective, kill. True to its nature, Nexuiz brings with it that old school touch of gaming along with the new school graphics of modern games. I must admit, you can never get tired of killing in these styles of games.

Nexuiz is aimed at Online gaming and a fight between numerous foes from all over the planet. You also have the option of Bot training with your own level of difficulty. This title boasts nine maps with nine weapons throughout and crams two teams of four together to battle out to the death. Every map has its own feel to it but they all have the claustrophobic feel to them, this is a bonus because you don't have to look far for your next victim. Complete with power ups and kill streaks, you will find yourself pumping lead into your friends and foes an exhilarating experience in its own.

With all the good stuff, there is unfortunately some bad things as well. Due to the nature of this title, being an Arcade release (Xbox 360) it doesn't seem to get the attention I feel it deserve among the community. This being said you can find yourself waiting anywhere from 10 seconds to 10 minutes in the lobbies for a match to start. Luckily you have that Bot training option. Another is that there is no Split Screen availability, which kind of sucks alot because unless you have two consoles at home you wont be able to play with any visiting friends or family members.

We can't allow ourselves to get turned off by the little things though. The good definitely outweigh the bad in this instance. Running around in these arenas took me back on the nostalgic path to the old shoot em' ups. I find it excellent that there are developers out there such as AlienTrap that aren't afraid of shoving a game like this through Cry Engine 3 and unleashing the results on us gamers. This along with Leaderboards can have anyone fighting it out to be the top in the world.

I found Nexuiz to be an absolute blast and I've always enjoyed these style of First Person Shooters. Apart from the spots where I felt it fell short, this title is a must have to anyone that loved the Quake games and is looking for  some fun among groups of friends.

4-stars

My overall rating for Nexuiz is 4/5
