Just finished (well a few months ago) the most recent Song of Ice and Fire aka Game of Thrones books. I feel so sorry for people not reading the books and just watching the shows, if they had any idea how trivial their allegiances and hopes for the characters are right now compared to how they'll be three seasons from now.

The book was a little slow to start but when it got rolling it really got going blasting through to a series of endings both gripping and frustratingly open ended. Seriously, if you were hoping for even the tiniest bit of closure to any of the terrible shit thats happened in the last two books don't get your hopes up. As usual in the Westeros world, things just get more and more fucked. I love it.

Easy read?, I am thinking of giving them a go.
