Wow, the last weeks seems like a highlight reel of all the games you must play this year. And if you picked up your copy of Mass Effect 3 last week chances are good you’re even playing one of those games right now.
So I won’t try and keep you from your Reaper plan foiling for too long with this weeks Tuesday Cap.
While it was good to hear that the seventeen odd extra characters for Street Fighter X Tekken on the PSP Vita would be added at a later stage to the console versions, it’s definitely not that nice to learn those characters are all ready on the disc, locked behind a downloadable code you need to pay for at some point. I don’t mind DLC, I think it’s an important part of the modern games industry, but locking up parts of something you paid for so you pay more for it later, that rubs me, and most people the wrong way.
The Simpsons Tap It game has been so damn popular it’s repeatedly killed EA’s servers making it almost impossible to play. I’ve been trying to play the damn game all week. It’s kinda fun, but it boils down to a Zynga game with Simpsons characters and buildings.
If you’re a massive nerd it’s going to hard to resist the free to play lure of Mechwarrior tactics, a turn based game set in the world of battling walking tanks. After each player has made their turns the game plays out the action in real time. The video of the battle can then be uploaded to platforms services such as YouTube and Facebook so you can show your mum just how you crushed the Iron Bear clan with your genius tactics. Or someone else’s mum if your game. You can register now for the browser game at http://www.mwtactics.com/
Here’s the trailer for Assassins Creed 3 with looks far broader and more detailed than any Assassins Creed game before it. Cannot, freaking, wait, for this game.
Here’s a trailerish thing for Halo 4 showing some of the changes going into the franchise courtesy of the new reign holders 343 Studios. Colour cautiously optimistic.
Another next Xbox rumour has leaked from a supposed UK trade magazine claiming the next next generation console will be available at retail next year and have no disc drive, but instead an alternative interchangeable solid-state card storage system. Sounds like crap to me, as a society we’re not yet ready for a console system that’s completely built on downloadable content. We’re only a few years away from the PSP Go and its monumental failure. Microsoft would be crazy to go without some kind of disc based system.
Valve were rumoured to be making a Steam service based console. But an official statement said, and I paraphrase, ‘Seriously? Um... no’, followed by, ‘Don’t even ask about Episode 3, I have a knife’.
Mojang and Bethesda have settled and Notch’s next game Scrolls will keep its name.
Diablo 3 will have no PVP at launch but it will be added to the system at a later stage.
Darksiders 2 which looks even better than the last one (and the last one was sweeeeet) has a competition to let fans pick the limited edition boxart over at their facebook site http://www.facebook.com/Darksiders/app_264310706979278
Skyrim received ‘game of the year’ at the 2012 GDC. Currently the list of game industry awards Skyrim hasn’t won is far shorter than the list of awards it has won.
In case you thought you’d got over the mental scars and nerve damage caused by Dark Souls, bad news, From Software has a sequel all ready in the works.
Avalanche Software (Just Cause 2, Renegade Ops) have announced they’re working on a licensed title using a modified version of the Just Cause 2 engine. No word on what the license is but rumour has it Avalanche acquired the rights to Mad Max not long ago (and when you read my soon to be posted article that talks about a Mad Max game just know this wasn’t the genesis of the idea), and I can’t imagine a better use of the Just Cause 2 engine than an explosive road warrior game.
Cult PC game Deadly Premonition, beloved by its fans and despised by its critics, is getting a PS3 release. Although given the issues with the title I taught console gamers are going to be particularly enamoured with the game.
Here’s a vid of Bioshock Infinite showcasing one of the new enemy types, the unique Heavy Hitters.
Here’s a short film by Heavy Rain developer Qantic Dreams, called Kara. It’s an insanely impressive tech demo, just watch it.
And here’s a Simcity vid announcing the latest game of urban development.
If you’re not impressed yet consider the fact this entire video isn’t pre-rendered, but runs real time on a PS3, it’s canned animation, but it’s ‘in game’ animation.
Peter Molyneaux has left Lionhead to start a new studio. No word on how this might affect upcoming Fable games. My Fable loving children were mortified at the news.
iPad 3 has been announced which is good because now I can get an iPad 2 for a bit cheaper.
Battlefield 3 will receive three DLC packs this year with tons of new maps and weapons for fans of destruction.
Blizzard has launched their counter attack against falling subscription numbers, the ability to invite friends to the game with a Scroll of Ressurection. If your friend accepts your emailed scroll they get a character instantly bounced to level 80 along with a ton of gear and benefits and the ability to switch over to your friends server. Not sure if cutting out all that levelling, which some of us actually enjoy doing, is going to endear new or returning players to the game.
PS Move must have title Sorcery has a release date confirmed off May 23rd, so start loosening up your wrists now.
Lastly, here’s the boxart for Hitman Absolution, looking stark and stylish as all previous Hitman games.
Ooooh, so looking forward to some crazy bald man murdering later this year.
