The Tuesday Cap – I'm not at GDC :-(

I’m writing this from the tin shack I occupy some where in the desert in the Pilbara. I have a laptop, water and food, but every time I try and leave I eventually pass out in the red dust, awakening back in the shed, my surroundings identical except for a single post it note in an unfamiliar hand writing that says ‘writing sets you free’.

Did I ever really leave the shack? Who leaves the notes? Where do I go to the bathroom? Am I just trapped in some existential game world ala this weeks released game Journey? Some of these questions have answers. Anyway, the point is I’m not at GDC 2012 right now, getting all that good Game Developers Conference info for you first hand. But here’s the stuff that happened last week in game world.

In other words, here’s the cap.

I'm secretly writing this on a Monday (shhhhh), so I don't know what exactly is happening over at http://assassinscreed.ubi.com/ac/en-US/index.aspx where a countdown timer reveals something interesting at midnight on Monday night my time. But if you're reading this and you haven't checked it out and you love Assassin's Creed, well you might want to.

Freddie Prinze Jr will play a character named James Vega in Mass Effect 3, maybe old news but it was news to me. I’m even more surprised the gaming community has forgiven him for Wing Commander.

Darkstalkers 4 maaaaaay be happening, rumours out of the Japanese Capcom office strongly hint that the monster mash franchise will be the next major project for Yoshinori Ono. It certainly seems likely, Capcom have been pretty thorough with mining the old fighting franchises. Certainly good news for fighting fans. Now can we start talking about an HD remake of Xmen Children of the Atom and the Capcom Aliens Versus Predator console game?

Indie game Hawken sure as hell doesn’t look like an Indie game, let alone a free to play game. They tend to be cutesy or cell shaded. Mech shashing game Hawken some how looks like a full fledged release title in this first trailer.

From the ‘strange rumours from twitterverse’ file, actor Joe Flanigan of Stargate Atlantis fame tweeted his new job, voice acting for a Battlefield splinter game called ‘AO4’. This has quickly been construed to be a sequel to Army of Two shortened from Army of Four. Guess we’ll find out soon from EA officially.

Xbox Live Marketplace has accidentally leaked details of Fable Heroes, a four player party game based in the Fableverse. It appears to be a game where people control one of four Fable dolls, based on characters, and compete in a series of party games. Items and gold won in the game are transferable to the Fable 3 character file and the still upcoming Fable The Journey.

Dust 514 will be a free to play MMOFPS on the Playstation Network. The game will be supported with microtransactions. Ha! Take that Live, where’s your F2P offerings.

Here’s the opening cinematic to Street Fighter X Tekken to remind you this is the fight game of the year. It’s also been confirmed that all the characters included in the PSP Vita version of the game (but excluded from the console versions) will be included over time as DLC.

Sleeping Dogs, once True Crime Hong Kong, has a trailer and it looks maybe okay. Just try and forget True Crime ever existed okay?

The above image leaked last week, purported to be an image from Doom 4 which had rumoured to be cancelled. Developer iD eventually spoke up and said the image had nothing to do with Doom 4, but also that Doom 4 had not yet been cancelled.

Double Fine’s The Cave is not their Kickstarter adventure game, it’s something else they’re working on.

Sid Meier is involved in the new Xcom game (not the crap one, the one that looks like it might actually be Xcom). If you don’t know who Sid Meier is, trust me it’s a good thing.

In other Sid Meier news Simcity 5 may be on the horizon. Pictures and rumors are circling the internet but nothing has yet been confirmed.

Silent Hill and Zone of the Enders are getting their HD remakes, Silent Hill in late March and ZoE in ‘the fall’. Incidentally, top of the list of things that pee me off in game blogs is writers using seasonal timings for release info. Seriously people, it’s a big internet, not all your readers are in your time zone, how hard is it to write Q2 or Q3?

Ready at Dawn studio, who made the excellent God of War PSP games, are working on a third person action game of some type.

End of Nations, the massively multiplayer real time strategy game we’ve long awaited and dreamed feverish dreams off is about to enter a closed Beta.

Iconic fantasy RPG Baldurs Gate may be on the cusp of an announced reappearance. Baldursgate.com has an image right now hinting at an upcoming bit of news.

Sniper Elite V2 preorders get an extra DLC mission where you get to kill Hitler. Kids may remember Hitler from that Youtube meme or as the bad guy in Castle Wolfenstein.

A new Xbox Kinect bundle is all white, with a white set, with a white console and Kinect unit. If you’ve been waiting to deck out your cold, sterile and emotionless all white entertainment room then now’s your chance.

Finally here’s some screens of that Devil May Cry prequel game that everyone was mad about for Dante not having white hair, or something equally stupid.

Actually, maybe they're right to hate on this guy.

Seeya next week.
