Here’s the interesting, not so interesting and slightly unusual game news from the last week. I hope reading this helps you rehabilitate from having your mind completely blown by the Dark Knight Rises this weekend past; which is, in case you’re unaware, the greatest movie of all time. Also, Anne Hathaway just... kills it, absolutely kills it with her Catwoman, she was magnetic. Yes, I might be in love.
Also Quakecon's on this Friday, and while there's no major announcements planned, it's always good for a few morself of upcoming game info, we'll have some for you next week.
One of the biggest oppositions to gay marriage in the US (i know, but this is going some where) has been the 1996 defence of marriage act which says a legally binding marriage can only be between one man and one woman. In the last few months a number of major companies and corporations and made public their organisations opposition to the act and supported those working to have it repealed for being unconstitutional, the latest to join the campaing is game developer EA. Hopefully, game development being a progressive industry, we’ll see more game companies flying the rainbow flag in the coming months now that EA has gone public.
Rumours are swirling that Final Fantasy Versus, a game Square Enix has been working on for six years now, has been quietly canned. The PS3 exclusive was initially meant to be a tie in to the universe of Final Fantasy XIII. There hasn’t been an official announcement, supposeduly due to fears within Square Enix that the stock price could dip at the announcement, but the team working on Versus has apparently been folded into the team working on Final Fantasy XV.
AND THEN shortly after I wrote the above Square Enix hit back at the haters saying it was all evil lies and the game looked totally amazing and they were gearing up to a huge reveal very soon. Take those conflicting views how you will.
The University of Southern California are working on a commerical VR platform for games and are even working on a title for it called Wild Skies. The tech is currently code named Project Holodeck and sounds interesting, right until you see this embarrassingly bad video. Why exactly would you have to lie down when you’re character dies?
Dance Central 3, the sequel to the games that are still the best reason to own a Kinect, has a world wide debut on October 19. The game will feature over 40 songs to bump and grind to, including YMCA by the Village People. Finally!
One of the first major announcements for the Ouya game console is a prequel to a 2015 major release from Robert Bowling called Human Element. Both games are about the survivors of a zombie apocalypse.
Here’s the first screenshots from Kickstarter funded sequel Wasteland 2, while they look nifty they show the game is still a long ways away.
Sleeping Dogs continues to look much better than any game derived from the True Crime license has a right to be.
Despite the leaked images of a new PS3 model from the manufacturing plant in Brazil, there’s no PS3 announcement slated for Gamescon next week.
Here’s a trailer for Critical Path, a "transmedia project exploring the art, philosophy, politics and psychology of video games" and featuring some of the heaviest of heavy hitting game makers. Looks interesting.
Polytron’s game Fez is having some problems for Xbox Live players. A bug in the game may be preventing some people from saving, and although Polytron were ready to roll with a patch, Microsoft intended to charge them, $10,000 for the privilege, or so they claim. MS has since released a statement saying Polytron and their backer chose not to pursue a solution despite Microsoft being willing to work together and possibly come to a compromise. Hard to tell who’s really in the wrong here, but when the fans are getting penalised nobody wins.
Ratchet and Clank creators Insomniac have just launched there newest game Outernauts, literaly hours ago, which you can play for free on Facebook. Check it out right here: http://apps.facebook.com/outernauts/
Now that Borderlands 2 has pretty much gone gold Gearbox are working on a new class as DLC to be released around three months after the initial game. The new class will be a Mechromancer, with I presume the ability to control and manipulate the games many robots. Also, Randy Pitchford can't believe the Borderlands formula hasn't been stolen by other game makers yet as it's combination of simplicity and popularity seems very thieve worthy to him in an industry where everyone survives by stealing from each other, or so HE says.
The Walking Dead episodic game series debuts tomorrow on iOS. You can buy individual episodes or pay ahead for the whole series as it's released.
Here’s Ellen Page and David Cage talking about Beyond Two Souls.
Minecraft on XBLA has sold 3 million units. Holy flaming zombie pants!
Here’s a gameplay video of the intro levels for Metal Gear Revengeance.
For Comand and Conquer fans EA have just released the free to play title Command and COnquer TIberium Alliances, a browser based RTS game.
God of War Ascension's team has apparently scaled back scenes that involved Kratos being violent towards women in the game. It’s nice of them to make announcements about the terrible things they were planning on doing, but have decided not to, otherwise we wouldn’t even know how sensitive they really are.
Here's a trailer for the new NVIDIA GeForce that's pretty and has fairies and stuff.
Deadpool comic writer Daniel Way is scribing the Deadpool game. Not necessarily a good thing, as other high profile comics writers skills haven’t translated to games in the past. But it will likely assuage fans of the character that he’ll get a reasonably fair shake.
Here’s some footage of Resident Evil 6 from SDCC to further sell you on Capcom’s next zombie game.
Ubisoft head guy Yves Guillmont has felt the need to mention to investors that Ubisoft really isn’t that invested in the Wii U, pointing out that Zombie U and Rayman Legends are the only original projects they have on the go, and other Ubisoft titles for the Wii U are nothing more than basic ports of existing games. Sounds like Ubisoft don’t have a lot of love in the pipe for Nintendo’s next money maker.
A Chinese game developer, Entertainment Game Labs, was accused by Torchlight devs of lifting art assets whole sale from their game to use in a game they were planning on releasing this month. While the Chinese Dev initially played down the comparisons as either coincidence or their developers drawing inspiration from Torchlight, after a few comparisons that looked like less inspiration and more imitation, EGLS are making drastic changes to their game to avoid the comparisons.
