Its Wednesday again and there’s been some strange happenings in the world of games. Let’s examine them in a small amount of detail shall we?
As far as I’m concerned the number one biggest piece of news this last week is word that Valve and Adult Swim, the afterhours department of Cartoon Network, are collaborating on a Team Fortress 2 related project. Could it be? Have my dreams been answered? A Team Fortress 2 television show? I’m an unabashed fan of every one of the Team Fortress 2 short films (Meet the Spy, being the best one, embedded below if you don’t believe me) and if they can maintain the same level of quality and humour in a 30 minute show then Valve could be onto a good thing. Of course this might just be a collaboration to air the existing short films on the television box; even so, that’s good news.
Nintendo has announced a new 3DS handhold. This one will be a whopping 90% bigger than their previous one. It’s a weird move, but also a very Nintendo move. They’re competition must be tearing their hair out trying to work out what they’re planning next. I can only assume some market data suggested the 3DS was fidgety at its current size and they’ve gone and super sized it.
Mass Effect 3 is getting that alternative ending people where bitching for. It’ll be released at the end of June and weighs in at a whopping 2 gigs. I predict not many people will be happier with the amended ending either.
Dreamworks is apparently working on a Need for Speed movie. It has a fifty fifty chance or being the greatest game to film adaptation ever made.
A Steam leak suggests that Final Fantasy VII, a game placed on a pinnacle unreasonably higher than any other game in history, may soon be coming to the service.
Microsoft have just released their new tablet computer, Microsoft Surface. Mick, our long suffering Editor in chief, suggests Microsoft may be on to winner, so long as they can get the tablet out before March 2011.
Quantum Conundrum, an indie PC puzzle game getting a lot of popular buzz, is headed for XBL and PSN.
Orcs Must Die! A groovy little tower defence game that’s still on my must play list, is getting a sequel to be released at the end of the year.
Valve is handing out copies of Portal 2 to schools to be used for teaching physics. More practical applications of games in education like this would be good to see. My kids basically learned to read using quest descriptions in World of Warcraft. I’m a negligent parent.
While Timesplitters 4 was apparently canned, Crytek are now cruelly suggesting a free to play Timesplitters 4 game may still happen.
Peter Moore, speaking through a megaphone from the EA tower made of solid ivory, believes free to play. Mr. Moore, the last person to successful make an E3 seem fun to an outside viewer, says that free to play games supported by micro transactions is not only inevitable, but it’s good for industry. The writing’s definitely on the wall, the current bust and boom cycle developers go through never seemed sustainable. Just ask THQ.
Okami, a beautiful game PS2, is getting the requisite HD re-release on the PS3. As much as I love getting the best titles from the halcyon PS2 days in HD, I’m much rather see new games that are reminiscent of those older greats. Speaking of which, where the hell is The Last Guardian?
Monopoly is getting a World of Warcraft version. I was more surprised there isn’t one all ready.
