Going Supanova

Nerds of a feather should always flock together. Do not worry dear reader; I did indeed just punch myself in the face for making such a bad joke. However, it is true that there is nothing better than being in the company of my fellow Nerds. So when the chance to attend Supanova came along, I could not pass it up. When my friend started to talk the event up, I just decided it was on like Donkey Kong and went ahead to purchase tickets.

I do not like to do things in half measures, so I decided if I was going. Then I would be going in costume. I grabbed a suit, white business shirt, red tie, and some black gloves. Then with just a quick shave of the head and a barcode. I became Agent 47. Much like everyone’s favourite shiny headed assassin, I had a mission to complete. A mate of mine is currently serving in Afghanistan. I wanted to get him a signature from none other than Christopher Lloyd.

At 6am my best friend (and honorary camera woman for today) and I set off for Sydney. A few hours, a bad McDonalds breakfast, an interesting scenic drive, and some train rides later we were in Central station. It was easy enough to find the right train to catch. All we had to do was follow the flock. Amazingly Anime Cosplayers and bright yellow Pikachus are fairly easy to spot, even in Sydney. I did enjoy the bemused looks from rail workers.

After only a short time I had spoken with a number of people heading to Supanova, and more importantly gained a slight insight into those who were to attend the event. One individual that stuck out was a bloke from Melbourne. He hated flying, and had not travelled much. But, he had jumped on a plane and flown into Sydney for a chance to meet some of his favourite voice actors. This effort more than even his N7 Hoodie earned him my thumbs up.

Another train ride, a short speed walk, and a line ride later we were inside Supanova. It was like we had stepped into another world. Rebel Pilots and Stormtroopers wandered the aisles eying the R2 units as they passed. Cosplayers from all genres enjoyed and photographed one another’s costumes. There were five Ezios for every Master Chief. It was truly amazing. I found it odd to be in a place that had the unspoken social agreement that it was acceptable to go up to a total stranger and get a photo. I had a few initial awkward moments when someone would ask for a photo of the back of my head. But I got used to it. Such is Supanova.

We moved through the throng of people that had clustered around the myriad of stalls. I managed to grab a copy of the Dungeons and Dragons starter box, known as the ‘red box’, for only twenty four dollars. This made me feel quite pleased with myself. We emerged from the swirling mass of people. Just outside the signing area. Token in hand I approached the line for Christopher Lloyd autograph. No small line dwarfing all others by comparison. I did get a little concerned when just as I got onto the home stretch they told us all he was going to lunch. They told us all he would then go to his panel and might come back after that. This put me in a tough position. Bail and face the line again. Or stay and hope he came back soon. With the support of the two girls behind me, I chose to stay. The Doc luckily returned. Here is a true champion and gentleman. He finished his lunch and came back to squeeze in a few more signatures. When I put forward the item I wanted signed for my friend. The Doc eyed it carefully. It was a Munchkin card. Munchkin being my friend’s favourite game, I thought it would be a good idea. I thought at first Christopher Lloyd had been taken back by it, but then I realised he was just reading the rules on the card. He strategically chose a spot and signed the card. He gave me a smile, and in an incredibly accurate impression of a school girl with a crush. I stammered a thank you and scampered away. I shared congratulations with my two line buddies and we parted ways, all of us sharing the same smile.

My best friend and I agreed that we had done enough for today. We had visited every stand, and taken one hundred photos. I had managed to purchase not only my D&D red box, but also something that I had wanted for ages, a Viking drinking horn (that is right ladies this man is single). We decided anymore time there would leave us both broke. So we started the long journey home. Overall the one thing we both noted throughout the whole event was the atmosphere. Everyone just seemed so incredibly happy. There was just a general feeling of shared appreciation for all of the genres. Not to say that everyone loved the same things, but, that they were generally happy to share and respect one another’s love of those things. Perhaps I am just over analysing it all. But, it just seemed like everyone was enjoying being reminded they were part of a large flock.

Finally I just want to give a very special thank you to my intrepid camera woman, and best friend, Lydia. She had a serious eye for talent on the day. Loved this picture she managed to snag amongst the crowds.

Also for those wanting to have a look at more of Lydia's great snap shots here is a link.
